Two Terracotta Vaulting Elements

Tracing Technology Transfer in the Western Mediterranean, 3rd Century bce–2nd Century ce

Lynne C. Lancaster

The history of vaulting in the Roman world typically starts with the development of concrete vaulting during the 2nd century bce in central Italy. However, recent findings have revealed that experiments in creating terracotta vaulting elements occurred a century earlier in 3rd-century bce bath buildings in Sicily and mainland Italy.1 This chapter focuses on two terracotta elements: the “vaulting tube” and the “armchair voussoir” (fig. 8.1).2 Through the study of their development, adaptation, and dissemination, we can trace socioeconomic changes that occurred as control of the western Mediterranean was negotiated among the Greeks, North Africans, Celts, and Romans.
